How to analyze an Nginx access log

Load a common or combined access log. Requests are grouped by path while the retained record explorer preserves complete URLs for investigation and filtering.

Finding slow Nginx requests

Standard common and combined formats do not include response duration. Slow-request metrics become available only when the log has timing values after the quoted combined fields, typically configured with $request_time and optionally $upstream_response_time.

Finding high-traffic URLs and errors

Sort endpoint aggregates by requests, errors, bytes, latency, or total request time. Status filters help isolate 404 and 5xx records, while IP and timeline summaries reveal concentration and peaks without making security claims.

Private, local log analysis

Files are sliced and processed by a Web Worker in your browser. ToolsWeave does not upload log content, filenames, IP addresses, URLs, messages, or stack traces. Exports are also generated locally.

Nginx Log Analyzer FAQ

Can the analyzer find slow Nginx requests?

Yes, but only when the configured log format recorded timing fields such as $request_time.

Why is response time unavailable?

Nginx common and combined logs normally omit it, and speed cannot be inferred from request timestamps.

Does it support custom Nginx formats?

It recognizes common/combined fields and conservative trailing timing fields. Arbitrary field orders currently require conversion to a recognized layout.

Are log files uploaded?

No. Analysis runs in a browser Web Worker and the selected file is read in local chunks.

Can I analyze a large log file?

Yes. File input is chunked and aggregate counters are built incrementally. Full-file searches return 100 records per page and rescan the source when filters or pages change. Actual limits depend on the browser, individual entry size, and device.
